The Fairy Godmother Project

The Fairy Godmother Project is a project of NEWMS (New Expectations for Women in Mississippi). It is a special project of CREATE, Inc., which lends credibility to the project.

The Fairy Godmother Project is the brainchild of many philanthropic women in North Mississippi. It was started only about a year ago from the desire of these women to be able to help those who are less fortunate in our area.

Some examples of things that they have done are:

An elderly couple in our area who both had cancer and were receiving chemo treatments, were sleeping on the floor because they did not have a bed. The Fairy Godmothers provided the couple a bed, linens and pillows.
When a daycare for low income parents did not have shelving for the books and learning materials for their children - the Fairy Godmothers provided the funds necessary to build shelves for the daycare.
When a young mother graduated from the nursing assistant program, but did not have the money to buy her uniforms to start her new job, The Fairy Godmothers bought her uniforms so that she could start her new job with pride and provide for her children.

In 2010, the event grew to an even larger venue, the Hilton Garden Inns’ BancorpSouth Conference Center. With a record attendance of over 350 ladies the event was able to donate $13,000 to S.A.F.E., Inc. making it the most successful Mama’s New Bag event to date. Also new in 2010 was the addition of a live auction which included celebrity bags from Paula Deen and Sela Ward. Local celebrities, Miss Mississippi Anna Tadlock, who was also the event emcee; First Lady Lisa Reed and Mrs. Kay Bain also donated their gently used bags. New designer bags were donated by companies such as Hobo, Vera Bradley, Jessica Simpson and Big Buddah, as well as new bags from various businesses all over North Mississippi. After the community came together and cleaned out their closets, the committee racked up over 300 bags to auction and/or sell at the event.
